Applying for naturalisation/ british citizenship

Post by NTsela123 » Fri Dec 01, 2017 4:27 pm

Guys, have a few questions on the requirements and documentation to go from ILR to obtaining a British Citizenship, sorry if I am making someone repeat this from pervious posts...

Basically, I got my ILR end of last Nov 2016, this was based on my Tier 2 General visa after 5 years of being employed with the same company in UK (not with them anymore). I got all the required info, including the continuous employment letter, life in UK (passed the test) and the degree statement from NARIC as I went to University in US...and I got the ILR.

Now, it has been 12 months since I got the ILR, so based on the guidance I got, I should apply for British citizenship. Questions:

1) Do I need to redo my Life in UK test and the language requirements? I saw in their reqs document that I do not have to, but wanted to confirm if I need to include a statement somewhere, or do they keep records that I did this already for the ILR 12 months ago

2) Passport and ILR submissions - I plan to travel after I submit the application, so do not want to give them my foreign passport and the ILR, would copies be OK and how would that work (this is assuming I submit it myself and not through some counsel services, etc.)

3) Evidence of being in UK for 5 years and not go over 470 days, or so....ILR had similar requirement and I had to submit the travel dates for the 5 years. do I need to redo this and add the extra 12 months which needs to be below 90 days? Just not very clear in the guidance.

4) Do I need a reference letter from my old employer and / or the new employer?

5) anything else, besides the fee?

Much Appreciated!

A. If you have completed your life in UK test for ILR then you do not need ot redo this just take this to council when submitting your application,
- no req if you have UK degree or fulfilled this in the previous application for ILR

2) Passport and ILR submissions - I plan to travel after I submit the application, so do not want to give them my foreign passport and the ILR, would copies be OK and how would that work (this is assuming I submit it myself and not through some counsel services, etc.)

A. If you use Nationality checking service you can keep your passport and ILR, hence you can travel freely while your application is being assessed

3) Evidence of being in UK for 5 years and not go over 470 days, or so....ILR had similar requirement and I had to submit the travel dates for the 5 years. do I need to redo this and add the extra 12 months which needs to be below 90 days? Just not very clear in the guidance.
A. YES need to redo this from the date of application for British citizenship

4) Do I need a reference letter from my old employer and / or the new employer?
A. I didn't provide any reference letter and I do not think it is required to provide any reference letter from employer. All you need is your employment details for last 10 Years

5) anything else, besides the fee?
If you want to apply for passport at same time then you pay extra I think £80+

I asked current and former employers for employer letter. This is partly because I am an EU citizen (have my British citizenship as well now) and it was harder to prove residency dates as we don't get stamps in our passports.

However, my solicitor said that employer letters were a good idea anyway, the Home Office likes to know some things about your life before they approve your application. Mine was approved pretty quickly, it was passed to a caseworker very fast, I think because I made the checks for them easy.

If it's no bother, get current and past employers for the past 5 years to confirm dates of employment, paid and unpaid annual leave taken (proves residency further) and salary as well.
