Unpaid/voluntary work with Sponsor

Hi All,

I have a quick question about a tier 2 colleague on a 37.5h contract as per Home Office requirements. Which is sponsored by our company. However, he is keen on doing some unpaid (voluntary) work for the sponsor to help his development and help the workplace he currently works in.

My question is, Is this legal? Where can I find this information to make sure he can do extra unpaid hours?
