Tier 2 extension required while on Maternity leave

Hi
My Tier 2 visa expires in March 2019 and I will require and extension from my employer. It is very likely I will be pregnant and already on Maternity leave when this is due. Can they refuse my extension or are they legally required to extend my visa since they are required to keep my job while I am on Maternity leave.
