Schengen visa for family member, when to apply

Hello, I know that a standard tourist Schengen Visa can be requested not early than 3 months before the travel, what about a family member Schengen Visa? Can we request it now for a travel in May or we still have to wait at least 3 months before?

The application date is underlying schengen rules. There is nothing in the directive which give a better position.
