Processing time for renunciation of British citizenship (Form RN)

Post by robin12345 » Tue Apr 17, 2018 11:11 am

Hi everyone,
My wife is an Irish national and born in UK so automatically that qualifies her as British national. so now we want to sponsor my parents from abroad (outside EU)as dependents. Best thing is for us if we want to sponsor my parents is if my wife renounce her British citizenship (which she doesn't even own in her first place) and become only an Irish national.
I was wondering if anyone here has applied or know how long renunciation process takes ?
Thank you.

Hi robin12345,

I do not have personal experience with renouncing British citizenship. However, from a brief scan of the board it seems that the process used to take British/Irish nationals as little as six weeks in 2012 and two or three months in 2014.

Note though, that the wait for a renunciation certificate can take up to six months and you should plan accordingly. Renunciation of citizenship is a serious step and should not be taken lightly. In my last link this is repeatedly mentioned by the moderators. Your wife needs to be certain before going through with this course of action.

Hope it works out for you all whatever you decide.

Cheers,
Twine

Does she really need to renounce her British citizenship? In some cases dual citizens have the same rights as EEA citizens regarding dependants.

I would not give up British citizenship lightly, without looking into this very carefully. Especially since you don't know what your rights will be after Brexit.

Only if the non EU dependent is already in the UK as far as I understand. In the OPs case, they are not in the UK yet.

From my understanding of the process, renunciation is the only way for a non-EEA national to join a family member in the UK who is a British & Irish national via the EEA route without all parties having to first settle in another EEA country.

This avenue will be closed / removed / severely modified / who knows (?) once Brexit happens though ...so I suppose the OP has to make a decision pretty quickly.
