Looking for advice on move to Barcelona

Post by HaleyF » Tue Apr 08, 2008 10:57 pm

Hello everyone, thank you so much first off for taking the time to help all us visa seekers out :)

My boyfriend and I are hoping to move to Barcelona near the end of the year. We’re currently both Canadian citizens, though he was born in Greece so is in the process of re-applying for his Greek passport. I’m not so lucky so will be doing things the hard(er) way.

We’re planning on staying for a few years at least so am I right to assume I would need to apply for a work visa then apply for residency when I arrive? I know I have to apply for the visa in Canada so I’ll need to line up a job before going. I am wondering about the long term though - Do I have to stay at the same job I got the visa for? Or can I switch as much as I want while my work visa is still valid? How long do I have to wait before I can apply for residency and once I get it do I still have to have a work visa?

Thank you so much to anyone who can clarify any of this for me!

My partner and I have been together 2 years. I'm 25 and work as an Interactive Art Director in a worldwide corporate advertising agency.
I have a degree (BDes) and several awards for work in my field. My work actually has an office in Barcelona but I'm kind of apprehensive about spending another 2 years in advertising, which is why I asked the questions about if I can switch jobs after getting a work visa.

You should read about Directive 2004/38/EC (see link below).

If you have a long-standing and substantial relatonship (and have documentary proof of it, like joint bank accounts and joint ....) then you are considered the partner of an EU citizen (assuming he has a passport or ID card to prove his citizenship).

That may be an option, though the burden would be on you to prove that the relationship exists.

Other option is a young-person's visa to work in work/study in Europe. Canada has arrangements with the UK, Ireland and Germany for this. There may be others. Check carefully on the embassy web sites in Ottawa.

There is also student SWAP.
