Unable to find Grandparents Marriage Certificate

Post by r3sonant » Tue May 15, 2018 2:25 pm

Hello.

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I want to get Irish Citizenship.

My Grandad was Irish (born in Ireland) and my Dad was born in the UK.

According to http://www.citizensinformation.ie I am entitled to http://www.citizensinformation.ie.

Apparently I need a copy of my Grandad's Marriage certificate. They are both deceased now. However my Parents don't have the original and my Dad doesn't know when they were married.

I have tried searching for the date on several different on-line resources but have been unable to find any reference.

I would most likely have been before the war so It's highly possible any records were destroyed.

Would I still be able to get Irish Citizenship without this document? I have my Grandad's Birth and Death certificates and my Dad's Birth Certificate. I can easily get a copy of my Parents Marriage certificate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Were your grandparents married in Ireland? If so IrishGeneology.ie has a lot of records online. It's free to search.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think they were but my Dad is the only member of my family left who would know and he doesn't know.

Worth a try I guess.

Can I not get the citizenship without this document?

Thanks.

One other source to try is the Mormon church's genealogy site https://www.familysearch.org/.

They have a lot of information. You need to register to search. But it's free. I had a trial subscription to Ancestry.com, and found nothing there that I did not subsequently find on the free site. I don't know what they have for UK records, as my searches were limited to the US and Ireland.

My situation was pretty simple to research. I knew that my grandparents emigrated to the same city separately, and never lived anywhere else after that. They never had drivers licenses. So it was unlikely they were married in a different city. If your dad was born in the UK, and his family lived in the same place for a long time, perhaps that is where your grandparents married?

I don't know what they will do if you don't have this document. I just applied for Foreign Birth Registration a few weeks ago, so I'm a novice to this.

I had a look on the Mormon site you suggested and there were a lot of results but none of them were what I was looking for.

Thanks though.
