VAC appointment date for biometrics (Settlement Visa)

Can anyone assist me in answering an important question. After completing and submitting the online application for a Settlement Visa what options are there concerning a biometrics appointment booking. Can you select dates and times available or are they predetermined? If the latter from your own experiences what was the gap in dates from submitting the online application and a fixed VAC biometrics appointment?
