Citizenship application advice for child of ILR parents

Post by DeGea » Tue Jul 10, 2018 10:15 pm

Hi all,

Thanks for reading my question. I need some advice please. My wife and I are both originally from Malaysia but have lived here since 2005 (myself) and 2007 (my wife) due to university etc. We now work here, bought a house etc. We have recently been granted ILR this year. We had a son in 2016 who was born in the UK and he was a dependent of my wife on her previous Tier 2 visa prior to getting ILR.

Question 1:

What is the best way to get my son settled in the UK? We asked our solicitor at the time of my wife's ILR application if we could do our son's at the same time but he explained this is not allowed and my wife has to get her own ILR first before sorting out her dependent i.e. our son. Is applying for British citizenship for him the best way of getting him settled? Or is there another option for e.g. applying for him to be a dependent on my wife's ILR?

Question 2:

How long does the process normally take and would people advise to use postal service, or premium day service? We used the same day service for our ILR and it was extremely expensive, disproportionate to the cost in our opinion.

Thanks in advance.
