Can i apply being a workpermit holder ?

Hi,

I am currently in UK, working on an assignment, sent from an India based company. I am having the work permit visa, valid till Oct mid this year.

My questions to this forum are as follows:

1. Can i apply fot Tier 1 general highly skilled professional visa ? Where
can i get correct information in this regard ?

2. How long will it take to get my original documents back, since, it should
not happen that my indian company asking me to go back to India,
with the original documents still lying with UK home office ?

3. Do i need to be present in UK till the entire visa process is completed
(i mean, till it is approved and visa obtained)

4. Will i get the visa before my workpermit expires (before oct mid 2008)
if i apply immediately ?

3) Yes, they need your passport.

I'm very in the same situation as yours and planning to apply for Tier 1 (just waiting for that university letter). Have you applied for the tier 1? Please share your experience and any additional information you've gathered for this scenario (WP->Tier1) so far....
