Naturalisation - (Lack of) NI Contributions and Employment Status

Post by squidger999 » Tue Jul 31, 2018 8:52 pm

The “Application for Naturalisation as a British Citizen” form AN (June 2018) for “Supporting Documents Section 10” asks for “Evidence of National Insurance contributions covering the relevant period” (shown as payslips, P60s, and letters from employers).

1. What is the “relevant period”? My wife acquired her ILR via the five year spouse visa route. Is five years the relevant period? Yet Section 1.50 asks for “Employment history in UK during past 10 years.” Is that the relevant period?

2. Does it matter if the applicant is not employed at the time of the application and hence does not have NI contributions? Is payment of NI (and, presumably, income tax) a requirement for obtaining BC? There will be applicants who have spent the spouse visa period looking after children while their partner works (and met the income requirements). (Or, in rare cases, where both parties have entirely supported themselves via savings rather than income).

3. Section 1.46 asks if the applicant is an “employee”, “business partner”, “self-employed”, or “director”? What if the applicant is a housewife / house-husband (or unemployed / between jobs)? What are they supposed to write?

Thanks! We appreciate this forum very much.
