Need to do anything before step child turns 18?

Post by neung » Sun Aug 05, 2018 3:46 pm

Dear immigration experts.

My step daughter is Thai but has lived with me and her mum in the UK on and off since she was 4 years old, she is now 17. Her natural father left them when she was 2 years old and has never been seen / heard from again.

I am British by birth, both my Thai wife and step daughter have British Citizenship and British passports. They both went to a ceremony and both got a certificate. My wife had to do the life in the UK test.

I have not legally adopted my step daughter, but she has my surname on all her legal documents in the UK.

My step daughters passport expires in 2020 I think.

So what happens when she turns 18? Does she just remain a British citizen? And we don't need to do anything?

Or do we need to do something else?

Thanks

Hi Vinny

Thanks for the reply.

I had it in my head for some reason, she'd have to apply again as an adult or I'd have to adopt her before she turns 18.

So your sure we don't need to do anything?

Thanks again.

Her British citizenship doesn't suddenly just cease because of age.
