Dear all,
I am a Spanish national, married to a Chilean national, and in a couple of weeks we will travel together to London as I will be studying a 12-month course (my wife will not be studying during this period, but she will be living with me in the same address).
Therefore, I plan to enter to the UK as a Spanish citizen and my wife as a direct family member of an EEA national. We did not apply for an EEA Family Permit as we did not have enough time to do so (we will be flying to London in two weeks), so when entering to the UK we will have at hand a translated copy of our marriage certificate. We got married almost 2 years ago and have been living together for approximately 5 years in Chile, so we understand that we shouldn't have any problems at the airport if we provide a marriage certificate to border control. Could anybody confirm if our understanding is correct? (UK Government's website states that EEA FP is not mandatory, as it is only recommended to facilitate entrance to the UK).
Now, regarding access to the NHS, I understand that for this we would need to have an European Health Insurance Card ("EHIC") or Comprehensive Sickness Insurance ("CSI"). As I do not reside in Spain I was told that I am not entitled to an EHIC, so in order to have access to NHS I should buy CSI. However, here is were a big question arises: I understand that CSI does not cover pregnancy (except on cases where there are complications with birth), so what happens if my wife gets pregnant and our baby borns in London? Will we be charged for the hospital costs involved even if we have CSI?
We would really appreciate any comments on this matters, as I had not been able to find information on this.
Many thanks in advance!
