US citizen moving to Italy with UK citizen

My UK spouse will begin formal employment in Italy this October and I would like to join him. I am an American citizen. Can you please tell me if I must apply for a VISA, I have found conflicting information online, and the procedures I must follow?

You can just travel to Italy and once there register.
