I'm looking to shorten my super long Sri Lankan name to just a simple First Name Last Name and was wondering if this would complicate anything. I currently hold ILR status (vignette) and have been for over 8 years. My plan is to obtain citizenship by naturalisation.
In order to change my name, I would have to visit my birth country and jump through a number of hoops before I can obtain a new birth certificate with my name amended. Once I'm back in the UK, this certificate will then be used to obtain a new passport at the embassy. My plan is to then use this new passport, along with my old passport (proof of ILR) to obtain a new BRP card (NTL). I could then use this and my new passport as ID to change all other forms of ID such as driving licence and bank information. Finally, sit the Life In UK test and apply for citizenship. To make things more complicated, I wish to retain my Sri Lanka citizenship by applying for dual citizenship, but this is unrelated to the issue at hand.
(1) Would I have any issues with the NTL application if I'm applying for the BRP card under my new name since it's not an exact match on the name that was initially granted ILR status? For example, when I have to provide additional documents to support my application that has the old/longer name.
(2) As above, would this name change cause any further issues when applying for citizenship, again, due to my ILR status being granted under the old/longer name?
(3) If this is proving to be a complicated process, should I consult solicitor or should this all be trivial?
Thanks in advance!
