Help for a newbie.

Is this correct? The spouse of a British citizen abroad applies for a spouse visa, then is issued a visa but has to go through entry clearance?

Or has to go through entry clearance before a visa is issued?

More specifically what exactly is Entry Clearance? Is it an interview?
