Trying to understand the difference between the EEA Family Permit and the 1a stamp you could receive on entry with sufficient evidence.

As I understand, the EEA permit allows me to find employment, for at least the first 6 months as long as I apply for residence card as soon as possible for longer term.
Does the 1a stamp allow the same? Is it in function the same as the EEA family permit, or if not what are the actual differences?
