Question about dealing with UK Border Control

Post by Orval1987 » Thu Jan 31, 2019 6:23 pm

Hello. I am a US citizen in the process of moving to the UK to get married to a British citizen (i.e. a fiancée visa even though I know that isn’t really an official name). I had been working in a Schengen country; my Schengen residency visa expires in a few weeks and my UK visa is valid through July although I hope to be married and have the spouse extension done well before then. When I went through passport control with my UK visa for the first time, the border officer asked to see my Schengen residency permit. Everything went fine and my UK visa was stamped, but now I’m worried and wondering if I have a reason to be.

I am going back to the Schengen country in a few weeks (before my residency permit expires) to tie up some loose ends. One thing I had planned to do was deregister from the tax rolls, which would require me to turn in my Schengen permit.

If I turn in my Schengen residency permit, will I have a problem getting through UK control with my US passport and an already-stamped fiancée visa? Specifically I am confused about how I would be expected to answer a question of residency; am I allowed to say I live in the UK with my fiancé even though I won’t have the long-term visa extension yet? Should I default to my US passport/long-term US address? Should I bring wedding notice documentation with me? Or should I hang onto my Schengen permit for now and deregister later?

I feel like I am way overthinking this (my fiancé thinks so) but I don’t want to fork over my Schengen visa and then find myself locked out in residency limbo at Border Control. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

You should be fine either way in my opinion given that US nationals are non visa nationals and you have been admitted before
