New passport visitor visa

I am a Chinese national wanting to visit the UK with my boyfriend who is a UK citizen living with me in Hungary. My passport has only 5 months left to run. I have ordered a new passport which will arrive within the month.
My question is, can I apply for a six month visitor visa on my old passport and have my new passport as well when I enter the UK or must I wait for my new passport and apply with that which may be some time?
We need to visit quickly i.e. before Brexit.
