Received student visa, now change university/institution

If I have received a uk student visa for a MPhil + PhD degree for 4 years in University X. But later on decided to change to a different university (say university Y) for a MPhil for 1 year to start with, as I will need to pass another exam at the end of the year before being admitted into a PhD program. Do I need to inform the uk Home Office for this? If so, what is the implications for my student visa status and length of stay in uk? many thanks! :o
