Cannot leave the US for two years?

Post by martinproll » Mon Jul 14, 2008 1:10 am

Hi all.

My girlfriend is a US national living in Houston. We have bought a house in Houston. We plan to marry this year. Is it true that at some stage in the application process that I cannot leave the US for two years? Is this after we are married? I know my girlfriend has to file fiancee papers, then I have to go to the US and we have to marry within 90 days. Then I can apply for permanent residency? What next?

Many thanks for your help
Martin

As far as I understand ...

You need Advance Parole to travel once the application to adjust status to permanent residence has been made.

After you have your Green Card, you can travel freely (for vacations) but must stay living in the United States. After you become a U.S. citizen you can leave for as long as you like.
