Extension of Family Visa 5 Year Route

Hi, my husband is here on a spouse visa from Turkey and arrived in U.K. October 2017. We need to start thinking about applying for his 2.5 year extension and I believe we can apply 28 days in advance. My question is do we count the 2.5 years as when he first entered the U.K. for example Oct or do we go by what’s on his biometrics card which states exp Jun 2020? I am slightly confused so any help would be greatly appreciated.
