Indefinate stay for work permit

hi guys can u please help me
i was granted a work permit for 5 yrs in 2003 as deputy manager. 2yrs ago i was promoted as general manager but did not realise that i need to inform the home office. off lately 3 months ago one of my friend advised me to inform the home offfice about the change, when i tried to do with my lawyer they said that i need new work permit and the post should be advertised
i will be completing 5 yrs on my work permit on 19th sep 2008 and i booked to attend on the day decission for my indefinate stay on 27th of this month.
will all the correspondence letters to home office regarding my promotion be a problem for getting my indefinate stay??
i am bit worried because all my letters were given with home office reffernce no. can u also suggest me what to say if they ask me about the letter i sent to update my status??
