Married to a US citizen but we live in canada

If a canadian marries a US citizen in canada, and live in canada, what are the rules, procedures for the american spouse to give citizenship to the canadian one? Are there residency requirements that they have to live X in years in the US? Or is being married but both not living in the US enough? How does that work?
