EU citizen: is it possible to work in Dublin and live in Belfast?

Post by teresarossi » Thu Aug 13, 2020 11:47 am

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me with the following: I am an EU citizen and I have a permanent job in Ireland. Since my job does not require me to go to the office every day I was wondering if it would be possible for me to live in Northern Ireland? The cost of living in Dublin has become unbearable for me and I guess that living nearby Dublin and commuting for hours does not make sense. I was thinking of moving to Belfast and commuting; in that doing I would still have the chance to live in a city rather than an isolated town nearby Dublin.

Let me know if you can help me with this.

All the very best to you all,

Teresa

Hi Teresa,
There something you will need to bear in mind. You will normally be required to get PPS number to pay TAX in ROI. Most probably you will be requested to open bank account in ROI. I think that ROI revenue and bank could satisfy with you NI residence address ( proof of address), but better to check this things in advance with them to avoid later misunderstandings.

Hi Avta,

Thanks a million for your reply!
I've been working in Dublin since early 2019, so I have a PPS number, a residence card, I pay taxes in ROI, and I have a ROI bank account as well. I am basically an Irish permanent resident now but I fail to understand if I would be considered a resident if living in NI as well.
That's so confusing!

If you move to Northern Ireland you will be living in the UK, and with Brexit coming you will not have any automatic right to live in the UK as an EU citizen. You would not be considered an Irish permanent resident as you would not be resident in Ireland, you would be resident in the UK, and you need to go over to the UK board to find out all the steps you would need to do in order to live in the UK post Brexit.

You will be considered as a frontier workers.

In the withdrawal agreement between the UK and EU, frontier workers are provided for. I will simply advise that you make an application for pre settled status with the UK authorities before the 30th June 2021, to protect your residence status in Northern Ireland.

Hi Obie,

Thank you! I've been reading about frontier workers a lot lately. It's a bit confusing but I thing it's the right thing to do. I've lived in the UK for 5 years as a resident, so I should be eligible for the pre settled status, I think.
Thank a million
V.
