How long will it take to find a job in the UK?

Post by Snoozles » Wed Oct 08, 2008 10:34 pm

Hallo everybody,

I heard a lot of horror stories about the economy.

Can anybody give me an indication of how long it will take to get a job in the UK?

I am an accountant with 5 years audit experience and a 3 year degree.

Can I expect to find a job in a week, a month, two months?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply.

Does anybody out there know of specific time lines in any job sector.

I know of somebody that searched for a job in the IT sector about 7 months ago. He found a very good job in just under 3 months in London.

I heard that the IT sector is very slow in the UK - but the accounting sector may be a bit faster (well, it use to be before the economic problems).

What type of accountant you are? CA, ICMA or ACT?
Global economy is effected around the world and wrost effected are banks and building socienties, No hiring for high paid jobs, but for gradutes and new hunters there may be possibilities and to be frank they will be open for locals. this time of year is not good for ordinary job hunting due to Xmas coming.. So be prepared for wrost!!! (4-5 Months)

Thank you for everybody's posts.

I am prepared to take a major salary cut at first - to get experience in the UK market and to get an income.

I have an ordinary bachelors degree. But I did 4 years Chartered Accountant articles (which give me the experience to be a chartered accountant in South Africa). My last job was as a managing accountant who supervised data capturers in regard with all accounting functions - from data capturing to the compilation of financial statements.

I am prepared to work for about 12,000 - 15,000 pounds.

Will that make my job prospects a bit better? Will that ensure that I get a job within a month?

As I see it, it is better to get a job within a month and get a small income and experience, than to sit at home and earn no money.

The dynamics, culture, work environment are very different from India (I presume you are from). But the logics of getting a job is no different from India. The economic crisis may give a beating on the job market, but not a cause for worry. Jobs are still there - may be not as quick as in the normal market condition.

I might travel by latter part of Jan irrespective of market conditions, however, it may not be wise to travel by Xmas since the markets would be snoozing for office jobs.

So, dont worry too much about market... Your initial days might be worth spending knowing about different aspects of life and naturally end up in picking a good job.

Be sure to read as much as you can on the life of UK before you land there.... will definately help you one way or the other.

And dont undercut....

In my experience, it wont help- rather it would affect the job prospects adversely.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am from South Africa, and will be going to the UK in mid January.

Thank you for your advice. I will not undercut my salary in a good job. I just thought that I may apply for a 'lower' job if I don't find a good job fast. I.e. I may apply as a data capturer at Asda or Tesco's accounting department. I know that their staff turnover is very high, and they hire regularly.

I am a bit concerned as I will have enough money to support myself for 3 months. Therefore, in effect, I need to find a job within 2 months as I have to wait for a month to get a salary payment.

I think there are a lot of people in my shoes.

I hope that the economy will look a bit better in January.

If lower job = hard job, try out of London. Its 2 times quicker to get a job.

All the best.

my cousin arrived in London in June and she works in finance. It was a struggle for her and her partner to get a job. She has advised all her friends in finance not to come to London until the industry gets better, or wait till next year

well she got a job after 1 month or so and he didn't have a job for 3 months. I haven't seen her in October yet so maybe he got a job now..or not...

They are travelling almost every weekend so he doesn't get too upset about it

she said that the lesson she learnt from it is to bring as much money as possible when you are moving to the UK. They are lucky because they saved alot so they are not in a bad financial situation yet despite the crazy amount of rent they pay!!

we (my cousin, her partner and I) are Australians. They both have a degree and a few years working experience. She is going on 26 and he should be about 28ish

Thank you so much Jessies. This information really helped. I also have a degree with a few years experience.

I just want to know what to expect - and everybody has been very helpful.
