Briton applying for American marriage records

Hi,

I'm trying to get the ball rolling with applying for dual Irish Citizenship as my grandmother was a citizen of the Republic of Ireland. The process has been complicated by the fact that her parents never registered her birth in Ireland, so I need to first register my own grandmother as a late birth registration. For this, I need the marriage records of my great-grandparents, and unfortunately for me they were married in Chicago.

I have emailed both the parish and the records departments in Chicago to try and get both church and civil records of their marriage. I know the date and church.

For the civil record, it seems that they don't have records going back as far as my great-grandparents' marriage, which was in 1905 - the site rejects my search. Does anyone know how I can apply for this? I have emailed the records clerk, though it's only been a couple of days.

For the church record, the Diocese requests a copy of a state ID with photo, which I obviously don't have, as a UK citizen. I have emailed to ask if a copy of a UK driving licence would be an acceptable substitute but, again, it's been just a couple of days and I might not hear for a while.

Has anyone had to do anything similar and might be able to give me a few tips here?
