UK Passport Spelling.

Post by ksmile » Tue Dec 07, 2021 6:55 pm

Hi and good afternoon.

I wanted to apply for my first UK passport, after naturalisation and it says that I need to submit any current or expired passports from other countries. I have now two passports one non-EU and one EU. My UK naturalisation was based on the EU passport and in the application form I was submitting my EU passport details and also my non EU passport number, but not the actual copy of it. My certificate is issued in the EU passport name. However, in my non-EU passport, the spelling of my name and surname is slightly different, instead of saying name Katarzyna (EU passport) it says Katazhyna, same with the surname. Therefore my question is, in my UK passport application, should I be sending my non EU passport in or shall I only submit my EU passport?

Thank you all,
Kasia

The requirement to submit your passports is specific to HMPO and does not relate only to the passport you used for the naturalisation application. Is there a specific reason why the spelling is different? This may be an issue as HMPO want to ensure that you don't hold travel documents in different names.

The reason for the different spelling is a translation from Russian to the English spelling. The EU passport, was issued based on the birth certificate translation not the passport details. When the translation of the birth certificate was done, I remember that I asked the guy if he can put my name and surname as in the passport I hold at the moment, but he said no, because translation from Russian to Polish is not like that one I had in my passport. So in my non EU passport I have kind of 'English' version of spelling and in the EU passport Polish spelling. I was thinking to submit a cover letter explaining why this happened, do you think it will be any help?

I think that should help - HMPO may even be aware of issues of how names are translated differently between Russian and other languages.
