CBP Officers at ports of entry

Hi

What is your experience with Customs and Border Protection Officers at ports of entry, what did they ask you and how were you treated? I mean particularly citizens who participate in the Visa Waiver Programme. What do these ppl look for and how can one convince a CBP officer that s/he will not work and won't stay for longer than 90 days and will return to their country of residence?
