Timelines for ceremony booking and passport application

Post by kellstrom » Sat Feb 03, 2024 11:10 pm

Hi, please does anyone know how quickly one can schedule a citizenship ceremony after getting naturalisation approval from the HO? And how soon after the ceremony can one apply for a passport? Also, for the passport application, what are typical timelines from submission to receipt of new passport? I'm asking because I'm trying to estimate how much total time from naturalisation approval to having the new passport for travel. Thank you!

You can apply for your passport on the same day of your ceremony.

I can't tell how quickly you can book your ceremony as every council works differently. Some ask you to book by yourselves online, some will call you to book in, some will email you or send you a letter and ask you to call them to book in, and some councils will just pick a date for you (you can change it if it doesn't work for you).

If you are in a hurry you can call the registration office of your council and ask.

Passport timeline you can see

If you received your approval email try asking the council if they have your certificate. I googled their website, found the citizenship ceremony section, and logged in on the same day I got the certificate and voila I could book a ceremony. Try to get in touch with your council and see how they do it. On the same day I applied for British passport and received it in 8 days (back in November) but first passports can take a bit longer. If you have children that were born after you got ILR it is advised to keep the BRP as it is proof of their entitlement to British citizenship (HO asks to destroy it and return it to face a fine, but very few people have actually been fined).
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.
