I might have to defer my enrollment into a master’s program in Dublin to next fall, but I would still like to spend time in Ireland before my program begins (I previously lived in Dublin for an extended study abroad period). I was looking at applying for the working holiday visa, but I had a question about the timeline for both of those.
WHA would probably be from Dec 2024 to Dec 2025
Master’s program starts Sept 2025
There’d be an overlap of a few months between the WH ending and my program beginning. I know that I have to leave by the time my WH permission ends, but I was wondering if it’d be possible for me to leave sometime in June/July then reenter in late August/Sept and then apply for the student permission? Or does the fact that I’d still technically be allowed in on a WHA clash with that?
The instructions to change from Stamp 1 (Working Holiday) to Stamp 2 (Student) is here:
https://www.irishimmigration.ie/registe ... ermission/
And is accompanied by this note: Please note that, if you are here on a visitor’s permission for up to 90 days or if you are here on foot of a Working Holiday Authorisation (on Stamp 1) you are not permitted to change your permission. You are required to leave the State on or before the expiry of your permission. It would remain open to you to apply for another permission from outside the State after your departure.
Experience from others suggests that you should keep good physical documentation of your departure to prove you've ended your WHV via departure: at least flight tickets, evidence of spending outside of the Republic, accommodation receipts and a passport entry stamp to your destination outside the Republic. And your departure and re-entry should be a flight (not ferry) and not to or from UK (because no passport entry stamp) and of at least a few days (not hours.)
