First British passport for child from abroad (I have citizenship but no passport)

Post by hello438 » Sun Jan 05, 2025 3:50 pm

Hi All,

I applied for citizenship and naturalised whilst in the UK (giving me dual citizenship). Due to work requirements to travel frequently I wasn't not able to make my first passport application. I then moved abroad due to a new job opportunity.

I have not since applied for my first passport - has anyone succesfully applied for their first british passport after naturalisation from abroad?

I am now having a child, will the child be eligible for a British passport due to my citizenship or do I need to have a British passport? Having seen the application form for childs first passport - they ask for parents british passport (in this case I assume I will have an interview to explain my circumstances).

Has anyone had an interview regarding their childs British first passport?

Thanks for your help!

Yes - the child will be British. Your naturalisation certificate *should* be enough to get their passport. Go through the online form and see what documents you are asked to submit. As your child's claim to citizenship is through your naturalisation, I expect you will be asked to submit the nat certificate and the birth certificate. Keep in mind that passport applications from abroad can take longer.

Regarding applying for your first UK passport from abroad, if you naturalised under Section 6(2) (as spouse of a British citizen) that is fine, however this is not the case if you naturalised under Section 6(1). I would try to plan some time in the UK and apply for your passport there, then leave the country again.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

Hi.
I applied from Turkey last month. The online application was very easy and smooth. I received my Certificate of Naturalisation 13 years ago but applied for my first adult passport just last month. As long as you submit all the supporting documents, there will be no problem. Mine took only 3 weeks.

Regarding your child's passport: If one of the parents is British (other than by descent, by naturalisation) and you were married to your child's mother before the baby was born, everything is easy again.

Make sure you get a local birth certificate, and if you have time, register in the UK too to get a full birth certificate. You don't have to, but it will make everything easier in the future.
