OCI Application and Entry Visa expiry

My son is currently in India on an entry visa, which is set to expire in 20 days. We applied for his OCI two days ago. The FRRO mentioned that the OCI process might take at least a month and advised us to apply for a visa extension. My question is, if his visa expires on February 7th and the OCI is approved either before or within 10 days after the expiry, would I still need to apply for a visa extension? Also, what would be the implications of the period he stays in India without a valid visa between the expiry date and the OCI approval date?
