NI Contributions Self Employed

Post by turpentine56 » Sun Mar 23, 2025 9:05 pm

Hello,

I have settled status since 2021.
I want to apply for British citizenship.

I have been self-employed since 2019.

I am not sure how relevant/necessary NI contributions are.
I file for my own tax self assessment using a tax software which calculates how much tax I need to pay. All the tax that I need to pay, I pay.

But when I check the Class 2 and Class 4 NICs, I don't think I have ever paid (because the software never indicated that I needed to pay anything of the sort! I only checked these now because I read that they check for NIC's for self-employed folks.

Does anyone have any similar situation or does anyone know whats advisable to me or have any guidance?

Thanks

I had a quite similar situation, my NI contribution were 0 as I didn't earn enough to be taxed. Got approved without question. I think, as long as you don't have any issues with HMRC, everything is fine. I assume you just earn below the threshold and that's why you don't pay NIC and tax, so no issues.

Perhaps this HMRC link clarifies: https://www.gov.uk/self-employed-nation ... ance-rates
As such not immigration related. The reason that self-employed returns are asked for naturalisation is that s/e NICs don't go through PAYE.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
