Wrong Tax Code Since 2021 – Will This Affect My ILR Application?

Post by Madhurook » Mon Nov 03, 2025 12:35 pm

Hi everyone,

I’m currently on a Skilled Worker Visa, which started in August 2021. Based on the 5-year rule, I’ll be eligible to apply for ILR in July 2026.

I’ve recently discovered that my tax code has been incorrect since 2021 — it has been 2283L instead of the standard 1257L.

Since I received a letter from HMRC stating that I didn’t need to file a Self Assessment unless my financial circumstances changed, I haven’t submitted any tax returns since then.

My questions are:

Will this wrong tax code have any impact on my ILR application?

If yes, what steps should I take to correct it?

I understand that I can ask HMRC to correct my tax code now and make sure it’s 1257L for the 2024–2025 financial year onward.

During my ILR application, would showing that my tax code has been corrected and consistent (1257L from 2024 to 2026) be sufficient evidence that my tax records are in order?

Any guidance or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

This has no relevance to ILR.

The letter you got is generic and standard HMRC practice. Tax code adjustments are sent to your employer as you are on the PAYE system. This allows corrections or adjustment to be taken care of automatically via your employer payroll software. You do not need to worry about this.
