Visit www.entemp.ie for more information on Irish work permit.
What profession are you in?
I dont think you will be able to change your visa status while in ireland. your employer can apply for a permit alright but once that is approved I think you will have to return to change your visa status.
There are basically two types of permits, a working visa which is valid for 2 years and a Work permit which is valid only for 1 year but is renewable

The reason i asked for your profession was because you may be eligible for the 'working visa', so have look into that, its much better than a work permit
http://www.entemp.ie/labour/workpermits ... sation.htm
also i am not sure about this, but i think there are special provisions for those in the health sector to be able to apply for the visa while in country, i will try and search for the document where i might have read it. also if you have a visa for UK you might be able to have the working visa processed for you at the Irish embassy in London ( i am not sure if it open for everyone, but i have a friend of mine who had it done there, it could be because there is no Irish embassy in our country)

as far as i am aware WP are only issued for a max of 1 year. i have not heard about the 3 year WP, i will check on the website. I think the only exception they make on changing visa is on people from without an Irish embassy in their home countries

suri_ire,

You cant switch from visit visa to work visa in Ireland. Your Work Permit will be issued only when you are not in ireland and once your work permit is issued you need to go to irish embassy in india and have to apply for entry clearance.

I came to ireland on business visa and then had to go back to india for work permit.

hope this helps.
