Student Visa - Sponsership question

Hi,

My cousin has been accepted in UK uni to start a course in sept 06. Can his father's friend sponser him as his father doesnot has strong bank statement.

I heard that only blood relative can sponser ? is it true. Experts please shed some light.

There is no specific list of sponsors in the student category but the visa officer will want to know why the person offering support is doing such when there is clearly no defined relationship to the applicant.
