Returning to England with wife

Post by saracen » Sat Aug 15, 2009 7:10 am

My partner and I intend to marry soon when our current divorce proceedings, to our respective partners, are over. I am a British subject, born in England, but living these last 20+ years in Israel, my wife to be is an Israeli passport holder. I intend to return to England next year with my future wife, and would be grateful if anyone could tell me of any problems that I should anticipate. Do I need to come to England first to find accomodation and work or, as I'm a British subject, can we arrive together? Do I need to show proof of adequate funds? And does she need Entry Clearance, as an Israeli passport holder she doesn't need a visa. I've been to countless sites, even of the government, but so many areas seem grey.

Your future wife does not need a visa to travel to the UK as a visitor, but she does need one for any other purpose, and if she arrives here to stay with you long-term and doesn't have a visa, she could be refused entry. If she was granted entry as a visitor and then applied in the UK, she would be refused.

She should get a visa as your fiancee or as your spouse if you've already got married. You need to start at this page of the UKBA website, and go on from there:-

The current fee for spouse settlement visa is £585...apply on form VAF4a before entry. You will need to prove that you will be able to support yourselves financially when you submit the application, so unless you have substantial savings, it would be wise to get a written job offer in the UK before apply. You also have to show that you have adequate accomodation available.
