paying taxes as a visa/ work permit holder

In a conversation with a friend from work, I was told that visa holders (foreigners) in the UK pay more taxes (higher rate...) than Brits. Is that true? Would be really unfair as we also cannot claim any benefits either so we're just wasting our money in return for nothing...at least citizens do get benefits in return....Can somebody who knows explain to me how it works?
Also whats the maximum salary you can get paid per month or year WITHOUT getting taxed? thanks!

1. The information is wrong as u wages are calculated by u tax code.
2. I work as an office manager and i process wages for the company.
3. U have got a tax free allowance of £5435 for 2008/2009 tax year.

2. i said £5435 for 2008/2009 tax year and not 2009/2010.
3. £6475 is for £2009/2010 which is correct but i did not refer to that tax year in my post.
