TOEFL CBT as proof of English language proficiency

Post by aaj123 » Sun Oct 11, 2009 7:00 pm

I have a TOEFL computer based test - CBT(obtained in June 2005) score of 293/300. Will this suffice as a valid proof for English language proficiency?

I had provided this as proof in my earlier Tier 1 application which was refused on grounds of incorrect evidence of maintainence funds. The refusal letter however mentioned that I had gained the required points for English proficiency.

This time I am trying to be very careful before sending in my new application. On reading the fine print on the UK BA website, it seems they have said they accept TOEFL IBT scores. So I now feel that the earlier case worker simply glossed over the other sections after having already found a fault in my maintainence funds evidence. My feeling is that had the funds evidence been fine, they would have examined my English proficiency evidence in a more detailed manner and probably come to the conclusion that it wasn't acceptable as per their requirement.

I think you were lucky to get away with that and you should not use that score anymore because the TOEFL test scores are valid for two years (page 14). You should take a fresh test. The details of available tests for Tier 1, you can find here.

Couple of people work with me who got away with similar situation. They had TOEFL older than 7 years and it was accpeted. Looks like there is a gap in the guidelines and the understanding of caseworker. Good as far as people are not getting rejected.
