maintanence funds 5 days short

hi all,
one of my friend want to apply for tier 1 general under the current rules. he has completed all the requirments for that, but his 3 months maintanence will be completed on 5th of april. he want to apply on the 31st of march with bank balance ending on 31st march which offcourse will be 5 days short.

my question is can he apply on the 31st of march.
and can he send another bank statement on the 5th april with a cover letter explaining the situation.
