Irish work permit for Mexican citizen

Post by dangermouse » Sun Oct 09, 2005 11:31 pm

It looks like I will need to return to Ireland early next year for family reasons. I myself am a Uk passport holder so for that there isn't any problem. However, my fiance, who is Mexican, will be travelling with me and as I will probably have to stay there for 1-2years he will need to get a work permit and visa.

I've already contacted the consulate in Mexico city but they never tell me anything other than when he gets a job offer his future employer will to apply for the work permit.

I would love to hear from someone who has already been through the whole process.

How difficult is it to find a job and get the papers before we go??

Is it recommendable for him to travel there with me as a tourist and then find a job and process the paper work when already in Ireland??

I've already contacted the recruitment agencies in Ireland, but i'm getting a mixed bag of responses. Some have told me to forward the curriculum and they will see if they can help, others have told me the chances are slim and it's better to come here first. I'm also keeping an eye out in local papers but are there any good websites with Irish job postings for overseas citizens?? or perhaps employment agencies that you know of who would help us find a job before going there??

Would it be easier for him to get the UK work permits??

I know this is long and with a lot of questions. I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions you guys could give me.

What does he work as?

For example, if he's a Chef, he'll get a work permit no problem. But if he wants a job which isn't in demand, he's going to have a lot of problems.

Are you planning to get married? Once you're married you could probably sponsor for an EEA Family Permit (whatever the Irish call it), or a regular spouse visa if you're also an Irish citizen.

If you are going to be living there for some time, you might as well investigate the route to Irish citizenship for your partner. It's 3 years residence if married to an Irish citizen, 5 years residence otherwise. There's no specific requirement to have "permanent resident" status in order to get naturalisation (because no such status exists currently in the Republic of Ireland) although that could change in the near future.

Alternatively, if you're legally married and sponsor for a normal spouse visa into the UK, he should be eligible for British citizenship after 3 years.
