Do I need a visa to travel to Italy for Holiday?

Post by Gabriella2305 » Mon Jul 05, 2010 12:12 pm

HI All,
I am married to an Irish National and hold a "RESIDENCE CARD OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF AN EEA NATIONAL"

Do I need a Schengen visa to travel to Italy? We are travelling together and have been told to take our marriage cert just in case.
I have read on a site the following:

The EU Directive 2004/38/CE has been implemented in Italy. Therefore, family members of EU citizens who do not have the nationality of a Member State, but have the new residence permits issued by the British Home Office bearing the specific following indication:

RESIDENCE CARD OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF AN EEA NATIONAL

Can anyone confirm if they have travelled to Italy with any problems?
APPLIED FOR EEA2 DEC 2009
RECEIVED COA DATED 8TH JAN 2010
CALLED HOME OFFICE 7 APRIL 2010 (HAS CASE NUMBER AND SAID IT SHOULD BE GETTING DEALT WITH END OF THIS MONTH/BEGINNING OF MAY)
EEA2 RC RECEIVED 25 JUNE 2010

Not all IOs are aware of the EU Directive and the implementation of it. So even if someone were to confirm success travelling to and from Italy w/out any hang ups, this might not be your experience.

The safe bet would be to apply for a schengen visa prior to; otherwise take your marriage cert. proof of your spouse exercising treaty rights in the UK, relevant sections of the EU Directive and a rabbit's foot.
