Can I take up employment whilst ILR applicatn is oustanding?

Does anyone know about the law with regard to working legally when waiting for ILR decision?

I have lived with my British fiancé for just over a year
When do the two of you plan to get married? I ask that because it seems to me that the easy, well easier, way through all that is for the two of you to fly to your country and get married, then for you to apply for a spouse visa to return to the UK. As soon as you arrive back with the spouse visa you will be allowed to work.

Which country are you from?
