Divorce before ILR granted - advice needed please

I am a UK national, my wife a US citizen. Married in the UK in June 2009, marriage has sadly and irretrievably broken down. We are set to divorce. She is in the UK on a spousal visa. Does anyone know what the rules are regarding her position being in the UK once divorce proceedings have started? Does her status change at Decree Nisi, or Absolute - and at what point does she become what I assume is termed an illegal alien? What does that mean regarding going back to the USA, and on what terms could she come back (she has family in the UK)?

Very much welcome any clear (ideally with reference to paperwork) guidance on this subject.

She can apply for visa to take part in divorce proceedings and if you have no childern then she can not stay.Unless domestic violence is involved.
