Moving with Pets

Post by UKbound » Sun Jun 11, 2006 3:48 am

I've gotten a lot of help from this site so far, but this will be an easier one.

We're moving to London on July 3rd. We have a dog (lab/spaniel cross)that weighs about 22kg that has already been blood tested, vaccinated, etc., in line with the UK Pets policies. He will be able to travel (his 6 month home quarantine is up) in October. That's the easy part so far. (surprisingly!)

My question is related to rentals. I haven't been able to determine how common pets are in apartments in London, policies, ability to negotiate, etc.. I've checked out many websites looking for apartments, and pets are never mentioned. I've google'd a bunch of stuff, no avail. I even bought a book on moving to the UK, and it wasn't covered! My specific questions are -

Are pets common in rental situations?

Since they're not mentioned at all on any Agent sites, does that imply they are not accepted? I'm sure that in some cases I could find something or negotiate something, but I'd like advice on whether that would be the exception, or relatively common. Coming from the US, most apartments have policies on pets specifically noted, so you can eliminate those up front.

Will it make a difference if I were to rent an apartment or a house? (For the area I'm looking at the costs are similar for both, although I would prefer an apartment, if I can find one)

Would there be overall restrictions on pets that couldn't be negotiated? For example, here in the US, some condominium or apartment regulations specifically prohibit pets, so it's not up to the owner to decide.

Lots of questions, hope someone can help.

Thanks, in advance. :)

Hi

We brought our border collie with us from Australia and are currently renting in north London.

I couldnt comment on how common pets are in rental situations, but I never got the impression from the many agents that we spoke to that it was an 'unusual', or difficult request. Just about every agent offered to enquire with the landlord as to whether they would accept pets.

I wouldnt assume that because they are not mentioned that they are not accepted. Both of the places we have rented (one an apartment; the other a house) didnt advertise as accepting pets - we simply asked upfront. I should also point out that I looked at the photos of houses for rent really carefully for signs of animals eg: cat flaps, dinner/water bowls, etc, and usually targeted those places - with success!

To be honest, we actually had no problem finding both our places, and in fact, when we moved to our most recent house, we had quite a few places to pick from. Maybe it was a combination of luck, patience and location (we live quite a way north), but there are definitely pet-friendly landlords in London. My advice is to just be completely upfront with the agents about it, and watch the rental lists everyday.

And good on you for taking your dog with you! We are so pleased that we did it and we have had such a blast with our dog in London. The UK is very pet friendly and we have taken him away with us many times. Most parks are off-lead too so it is very easy to exercise them and you can take them on public transport.

Best of luck to you and your doggie and get in touch if you have any more questions.
