A question for NI number! Thanks

I am now a MSc student and will graduate in Sep this year.

I have questions about the NI number. Firstly, is it the national insurance number? Secondly, how can I get the number?

P.S. when I tried to apply for the job position in a company, there is a question asking about that... I am not sure.... :( :(

hi i caould not possibly find answer of this question

can NI number reveal the history of employment as in which company you worked etc ect
