documents requirement for spouse visa application

Hi
Me (currently on student visa) and my son (5 yrs old- being my dependent) are planning to apply as dependents of my husband who was granted ILR in Aug 2011

I would like to know:
(1)do we need solicitor for our case
(2)can we go in person by ourselves
if option (2) is suggested what documents we will have to submit

My husband does not have a job.
I started work in the end of Apr 2011. I work 18 hours per week. I worked many hours in Jun and Jul 2011 which were my school holidays.
I have 4 months payslips so far.
