H1b Visa Holder, apply for B visa?

Hello guys,
I've been on an H1b Visa since 2008 (renewed last year)
I was let go of my job this spring and was unable to find a job. I returned back to Europe (due to family matters) instead of doing an I539 to transfer to a B visa.

Id now like to return on a B visa so I can visit a few cities and potentially return to work using my H1b depending on where.

Is it hard to obtain a B visa in this situation?
Is it a bad idea to say you might consider returning for a job?
How much money is customary to show in bank accounts?


I dont want to lie and do this completely by the books
