Irish Insurance

Post by newbieholland » Mon Oct 03, 2011 10:01 am

Hi Guys,

I have been looking for insurance in Ireland but they seem really expensive (above 2000 Euros PA). Is the Insucrance mandatory for self employed EU national and the family? Can anyone recommend a cheaper option?

Thanks

I assume this is health insurance?

It's not mandatory at all, you'd be covered under the public system. Question is, do you want it or not, and can you afford it.

I used to have VHI health insurance but dropped it as I found the public system fine. Though I have heard some horror stories.

The Directive says the Health insurance is mandatory for residence permit application under the EU treaty. Correct me if I am wrong.

Wasn't aware of that, you may be right, but I don't know. I'm non-EU and been here 12 years and it's never been an issue.

It is only mandatory for the family if the EU citizen is a student or self-sufficient.

If the EU citizen is exercising their treaty rights as a worker or self-employed worker then there is no need for health insurance.

Thanks Monife. Does that mean if an EU citizen is a self employed the Non EU spouse doesnt need an insurance too. What is the min income requirement to apply for EU FAM when EU citizen is Self employed?

No, the non-EU family member(s) do not need health insurance if the EU citizen is self-employed. There is no income limit however they do say you should have the same as or a bit more than the national social welfare payment. That would be family payment if you have children, if not, it would be the "couples" payment or 2 single payments. You can check http://www.welfare.ie for rates.

Montife is correct. The only time either the Eu citizen or the family members need special health insurance is if they are students or self sufficient.
